Early life
Rihanna was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty grew up in Barbados with a father who is from Barbados and a mother who is from Guyana. She listened to a lot of Caribbean music, like reggae, as well as American hip-hop and R&B as a child. It wasn’t long before she realized she loved singing. In high school, she won a talent show by singing a Mariah Carey song brilliantly. At this point, she got together with two friends to form a girl group. In 2004, her story took a big turn when American record producer Evan Rogers became interested in her. With his help, Rihanna made a tape that Jay-Z, who was running the Def Jam record label at the time, was interested in. Jay-Z signed her to the label because he thought she was talented. This was the start of her business career. She started her journey to fame by taking her middle name, Rihanna.
Music career: A Girl Like Me and Good Girl Gone Bad
The lively dancehall-influenced song “Pon de Replay” by Rihanna in 2005 made her famous all over the world. This song helped her first full album, Music of the Sun (2005), sell more copies. It had a mix of standard R&B slow songs and dance-pop with a Caribbean vibe, and it showed off her unique Barbadian accent. Rihanna’s first number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 was “S.O.S.” from her 2006 album A Girl Like Me. The track sampled Soft Cell’s 1981 hit “Tainted Love.”
With Good Girl Gone Bad, released in 2007, Rihanna tried to change how young she looked. Working with big names like Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, she moved away from her tropical sounds and toward smooth R&B, making herself look like a strong and daring woman. The album sold millions of copies around the world, and its catchy lead song “Umbrella,” which featured Jay-Z, was a huge hit and won Rihanna a Grammy Award.
Later works: Rated R, Talk That Talk, and Unapologetic
In early 2009, Rihanna was hurt by her boyfriend at the time, R&B singer Chris Brown. The event got a lot of attention. Tabloids and gossip blogs wrote a lot about this event, which led to Brown’s conviction for attack after they broke up. Even though things were hard for her, Rihanna released her album Rated R later that year. She co-wrote it, and it was known for its stark production and dark lyrics about wanting payback. Her sales went down a little, but “Rude Boy” was still a big hit.
In 2010, Rihanna came back with Loud, an album that was more upbeat and let people dance. The album had the sexually charged song “S&M,” which became her 10th number one hit on the Billboard charts. At only 23 years old, she was the youngest artist to reach this milestone. She also worked with hip-hop acts like T.I. and Eminem, and her voice was on the powerful song “Love the Way You Lie.”
She kept showing off her wide range of styles with records like Talk That Talk (2011), which had the hit song “We Found Love,” and Unapologetic (2012), which had the hit song “Diamonds.” Even though her relationship with Chris Brown again caused a lot of debate, including a duet on “Unapologetic,” Rihanna kept up a strong and attractive appearance.
Anti, her eighth studio album, came out in 2016. After that, she stopped making music for a while, but she came back in 2022 with the song “Lift Me Up” for the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She is up for an Academy Award for best original song because of this song. Rihanna also came back to the stage with a bang at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2023, after being away for four years.

Besides being a singer, Rihanna has also tried her hand at acting. She has been in movies like Battleship (2012), This Is the End (2013), and the 2015 animated adventure Home, where she voiced the major character. She was also in Ocean’s 8, a remake of the Ocean’s Eleven series starring women, and played with Donald Glover in the musical Guava Island (2019).
When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, it caused a stir in the beauty industry. It was praised for having a wide range of 40 foundation shades. After this success, she came out with Savage X Fenty, a line of underwear and loungewear in 2018. Rihanna worked with LVMH Moët Hennessy—Louis Vuitton in 2019 to make the fashion line Fenty. She was the first woman of color to lead an LVMH fashion house. The first collection got good reviews, but Fenty had problems, which caused a break in 2021.

After that, she dated rapper Drake, and in 2021, she revealed that she was dating rapper A$AP Rocky. A boy was born to the couple the next year.
